Tony the baker dreams that one day he'll become the most famous baker in all of northern Italy! But until he does, he must be content with making his simple bread for the villagers and keeping his precious daughter, Serafina, in "the finest clothes, the finest jewelry, anything her heart desires."
Poor Serafina! Having the finest of everything is certainly not at all what her heart desires! Although she is old enough to marry, her father will not even talk to the young men who might court her.
Each of their dreams seems far away until Angelo, a wealthy nobleman from Milano, passes by Tony's bakery and sees Serafina. Suddenly, it appears that Angelo may have the answer to both of their dreams.
In this refreshingly original folktale, Tomie dePaola creates a delicious story of how the sweet Italian bread in a flower-pot shape came to be called panettone, or Tony's bread. His spirited illustrations capture the warmth and exuberance of Italy and its people, and his wonderful characters are sure to make children laugh -- especially the three gossiping zie -- aunties -- who meddle just enough to help Angelo carry out his plan.
As Creative Director of Putnam's Whitebird Books, Tomie dePaola is
pleased to be making folktales from around the world, including America, available to a new generation of young readers. Having written and illustrated children's books for over 25 years, he is especially excited to be working with new, undiscovered talent as well as already published authors and artists.
He has illustrated and written almost 200 children's books, bringing him the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his "outstanding lifetime contribution to children's literature." His book Strega Nona was named a Caldecott Honor Book. Among his best-known works are Tomie dePaola's Mother Goose, Tomie dePaola's Favorite Nursery Tales and Tomie dePaola's Book of Poems.
The Little Snowgirl, written and illustrated by Carolyn Croll, and his own book, Tony's Bread, are the first of many Whitebird Books to come.
