TRADITION AND CHANGE:
The New American Craftsman
By Julie Hall
Foreward by Rose Slivka, Editor in Chief, Craft Horizons
1977

Description: New York: EP Dutton. 192 pp. 9"x11". (from flap): This book for the first time, begins the complicated task of clarifying the most important directions in contemporary American crafts. Collected between these covers are stunning works by 115 artist-craftsmen working in textiles, metal, ceramics, glass and wood. The 200 pieces illustrated range from the subtle vessels of the production craftsman to the delicate work of the fine craftsman - from the humorous, zany work of the Funk artist to the imposing and powerful images of the craftsman involved with the icon as a spiritual art form. The history of American crafts is beautifully intertwined with strong influences from Europe, the art of many cultures, and with such major aesthetic and philosophical movements as the BAUHAUS in Germany; Art Nouveau & Art Deco in the United States. Pertinent influences are recorded, along with new analyses, descriptions, critiques, and interpretations of the exciting artistic works created by the new American craftsman.
