FAQ
STILL REALLY WANTING TO BUY A PROJECTOR OR D.I.Y TRANSFER?
Your reasons for needing to buy a 30-60yr old item with a million moving parts with no warranty: Q: To see if your films are still ' any good ' A: Your films firstly are more than likely fine, shelf life is 80+years. If they give off a potent smell of vinegar, then you may have some issues, not that film can not be transferred by any means. If you take your film and it is curled at the sides, so bad that when you bend it back it breaks, then you have a problem. otherwise, you are good to go!
Q: My films are not labeled, I do not have a clue what is on each reel!? A: Need not worry! Firstly, viewing film on a projector, especially one bought with no warranty or testing, can damage film without you knowing. People constantly think that their film breaks while loading into a projector because the film is ' brittle ' . Not so, it's the projector 100% of the time. Moving metal parts vs film, the metal wins! What we can do is make a reel of film a separate chapter on the dvd, with easy to use & affordable software, you can rearrange them into the correct order after viewing from the luxury of your TV or computer, rather than fumbling with projectors, and of course, no fast forward feature on projectors! A 400ft reel will take upto 30mins to sit through! With dvd, you can whiz all around the dvd in seconds!
Q:) I need to 'edit' them so I can hopefully save some money on the transfer. A:) Again, the expense of a ' good ' projector ( $200-$300 for a reliable refurbed one) will set you back usually any gains you may have after you edit....not to include the immense amount of time & potential splicing nightmare you may encounter! 400ft of film loose on the floor does not look pretty!
Q:) I am looking to 'attempt' a do-it-yourself transfer. A:) There are usually a few reasons for people wanting to ' give it a go ' themselves. Of course, the idea that you'll save money & also the fact that one wants to be a part of the process, to have a hand of involvement in something very personal, your families history. A totally understandable & reasonable objective. Here are the reasons against, and of course you might think, well of course they are against it because they don't make money from people ' giving it a go themselves ' . 1. Next to raising children, it's the most frustrating thing you'll encounter in life thus far! 2. The flicker 3. 30-60% loss in original film quality over proper film frame by frame scanning. 4. Do do even a half decent job, it will cost most people on average, 5-20 times more money to buy even half decent equipment vs having it professionally transferred.
