PAIR of RARE

SHIELD NICKELS

1867 & 1882





By the End of the Civil War a Nickel Five-Cent Piece was issued starting in 1866 and continuing until 1883.  So this pair is one of the first and one of the last. 

Like the Two-Cent coin of 1864 - after which is was modeled - it was the first US Coin to feature the Motto "In God We Trust".  It was placed above the US Shield, but has been worn off with usage - just like some groups are trying to remove the Motto altogether from US Currency. 

Let's hope they don't succeed the same way Father Time has.

This is a Shipping Bill dated May 18, 1865 - just 5 weeks after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox - and is a marvelous relic of that historic time.  Aside from a fairly small tear at the left that you can see in the scan - it is in Excellent Shape.
