For the last two months of 2009, Papa Joe's Attic will be offering 29 of these great little books from the Little Luxart Library at a special eBay auction starting price of $6.99. Any that don't sell at auction will be moved to Papa Joe's Attic on-line outlets --including our eBay store-- at a slightly higher price. Free shipping is offered in both formats. At the beginning of 2010, the books will be moved to our brick-and-mortar outlet in western Indiana at a higher price.
The Little Luxart Library is the successor to the Little Leather Library which in 1916 began production of a select number of well-known works from Western literary classics in a miniature, leather-bound version. The little volumes were initially sold in F.W. Woolworth five-and-ten-cent stores and later were offered by mail order, particularly by advertisements that appeared in National Geographic from 1922-1924. The first two editions were bound in genuine leather but by the early 1920s, the books were covered in a beautiful binding with the look and feel of real leather. The books were originally green in color, but the last printings were red. The covers are beautifully embossed on the front with title and author and, on the back, with the series logo. More than 100 titles were included in the collection over the seven years the series was published, but each boxed set included only 30 titles. Robert K. Haas, Inc., began publishing the series in 1924 and continued the series through at least the middle of 1925.
The title offered here --in fine condition-- is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Tales of Sherlock Holmes.' All the books being offered have yellowing pages and some age-related soiling on the spines, but they are all fully intact: no broken bindings, taped or torn pages or other problems which would render them undesirable. They are all worthy of any collection The only problem noted on this volume is slightly bent corners which probably resulted from the book being taken in and out of the original box. All the books measure 2 x 4 inches. This one has 96 pages. As with all of Papa Joe's items, bid with confidence; satisfaction guaranteed.
