This is a fine sestertius of Julia Mamaea found in the Republic of San Marino. It weighs a 18.1 grams and is 29 millimeters wide at its widest point. The patina is an excellent medium red brown. This large authentic sestertius is certainly a keeper. Enjoy !!!!     Tater

During the coinage reform of Augustus, the denomination of sestertius was introduced as the large brass denomination. The sestertius was produced as the largest ae denomination until the late third century AD.Orichalcum was considered, by weight, to be worth about double that of bronze which is why the half-sestertius, better known as the dupondius was around the same size and weight as the bronze as but was worth two asses.Sestertius coins continued to be struck until the late third century.
