This is a very fine example of this ae As of Trajan. It is 27 millimeters wide and weighs in at 10.9 grams. The patina is dark brown and green on either side and one side has a lighter spot at the base of Trajan's bust. Tater can't tell you which side is which so you choose ! This is a Republic of San Marino find. Don't miss this one !!!         TATER

The Roman imperial ae as was reissued under Augustus during the coin reform starting in 23 BC. Generally produced in copper and weighing ususally between 9 and 10 grams although as years went on they became smaller. Its denomination made it worth a fraction of the sestertius. two and one half asses equaled one sestertius.
