Tekkeh
Throughout the 19th century, until its devastating defeat at “Goek Tepe” in 1881 by the Russian army, the Tekkeh was the most powerful tribe in Turkestan. Traditionally, Tekkeh Turkomans inhabited the border area between Ashkhabad and the oasis of Merv on the edge of the Kara Kum (Black Sand) Desert.
Tekkeh women were prolific weavers, and the carpets produced until the late 19th century are highly sought after today.
Perhaps the most impressive of all tekkeh weaving is the ‘main’ carpet, so called because it was the largest item woven by the tribe.
Until the end of the 19th century (or in many cases, later) the Tekkeh like most Turkomans lived in the traditional Turkoman OY.

TURKOMANS
Turkic peoples have dominated most of the region from the Caspian Sea to north-western China since the early centuries of the Christian era. From the viewpoint of rug scholars, the Turkmans are the most important group within this large ethnic cluster, at least in terms of quantity. Turkman weavers are famous for a wide assortment of weaving types, including main carpets, smaller rugs, bags of various kinds, long tent bands, nuptial trapping, and other objects intended only for family use. The Turkman tribal family played an important role in carpet making as a business enterprise for several centuries, if not longer, and geared its output for regional markets as well as distribution in Russia, in other parts of Asia and throughout Europe.
