This is a beautiful piece of Libyan Desert glass, which is molten quartz sand from an immense meteorite impact in the Sahara desert millions of years ago. This material is found only in a small area of the Egypt/Libya borders.
Libyan Desert glass has been revered for thousands of years, many pieces carved in to scarabs and found in Egyptian tombs, and even artifacts such as spearpoints and knives have been found. Recently the government of Egypt has stopped all collecting of this material, so it is getting hard to find.
This specimen weighs 58.14 grams and is a beautiful very large specimen.
