| This is a beautiful piece of Libyan Desert glass, which is molten quartz sand from an immense meteorite impact in the Sahara desert millions of years ago. This material is found only in a small area of the Egypt/Libya borders. Libyan Desert glass has been revered for thousands of years, many pieces carved in to scarabs and found in Egyptian tombs, and even artifacts such as spearpoints and knives have been found. Recently the government of Egypt has stopped all collecting of this material, so it is getting hard to find. This specimen weighs 955.9 grams (4779 carats)and is an incredible specimen suitable for either private and museums collections. It is highly translucent and suitable for use in jewelry since the color is great, the interior seems to be very clear and would be great for faceting. You can see the clarity in the dark photos where the specimen is backlit with a light. The other photos are taken in sunlight and there is not photo manipulation. The specimen measures 120 mm x 110 mm x 110 mm. The cube in the photo measures 1 cm. It is for measurement purposes only and not included in the auction. I am a meteorite dealer and fully gaurantee the authenticity of every meteorite and tektite specimen I sell. Be sure to see me in the March 1999 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine, I am featured in an article about meteorite hunters! I am also featured in Fortune Small Business magazine. Fortune Small Business Magazine Buyer pays $8.00 shipping in the USA and $25 to any other country. I combine shipping for multiple items. |
