Little Journeys to the Homes of English Authors - Afred Tennyson
The Roycrofters, East Aurora NY, 1899...
First Edition, Signed by Elbert Hubbard, a numbered, limited edition, No. 381 of 925,
This book covers Alfred Tennyson, frontispiece of Tennyson 'from the etching by Rajon', all on handmade paper, sides untrimmed, ribbon marker, in handmade leather covers, some pages are still uncut and connected at top edge (including signature/edition # page)..
A famous prior owner bookplate on inside front leather, from the library of Helen Gould Shepard (daughter of Jay Gould), includes a few lines of Wordsworth -
Elaborately designed/printed by one of the most collectible bookplate artists - E.B. Bird (name printed under the decoration).
Soft calf leather was damaged to front/back bottom edge and spine, looks to have been burned, perhaps by candle (?), interior or top 2/3 of cover not affected. The leather is 'shedding', the interior pages have the odd spot, tanned page edges, with wonderfully detailed illuminations begin each chapter.
Could do with a repair to the covers, still a wonderful signed, numbered copy by Hubbard and The Roycrofters. While these do come up at auction, the bookplate makes it a very collectible find for the E. B. Bird aficionado - bookplate is in excellent condition, a minor smudge to bottom edge, can be removed all intact quite with no folds or tears quite easily it seems...
