Staffordshire Bull Terrier Ratting in a Barn

Original Oil Painting on Canvas

by George Armfield (Smith) (1808 - 1893)

A highly accomplished oil painting on canvas by George Armfield.  The painting depicts a dog ratting in a barn interior with a dead pigeon and broken eggs in the foreground.  The painting is a wonderful example of Victorian animal genre painting at it's finest, the scene fairly typical of the artist's work.  The painting is in very fine condition, the canvas lined in the mid 20th century, largely original though with some possible localised restorations.  The painting is a little darkened with age, there is craquelure throughout, the stretcher lines are lightly visible.  The painting is attractive and ready to hang, presented in a simple varnished wooden frame.  The painting is signed with a monogram lower right.

George Armfield Smith (better known as George Armfield) was born and lived his life in London.  He was an avid sportsman as well as being a prolific and popular painter of sporting subjects. Armfield exhibited between 1830 and 1839 under the name G. A. Smith but used George Armfield thereafter.  He exhibited thirty two paintings at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1862 and exhibited regularly at the British Institute and at the Suffolk Street Galleries until 1875.  His work should not be confused with that of the less accomplished artist Edward Armfield.  George Armfield painted dogs, especially terriers chasing birds, cats or mice and spaniels flushing ducks. At his best his paintings are technically very fine.  He uses lively brush strokes which give an immediacy to the subject matter.

Armfield's work make many thousands of pounds at auction, please see the snapshots of auction results in the photograph section below.

This superb work measures;

Picture:       58cm(23") x 89cm (35")

Frame:         63cm (25") x 97cm (38")

Art as an Investment

In these uncertain financial times tangible assets such as gold and art are being recommended as a safer alternative to stocks and shares by many leading experts.

“Companies go bust, artists don’t,” said David Douglas an Irish art expert of the recent economic turmoil.

Damien Hirst's phenomenally successful sale at Sotheby's recently illustrates that high end art is able to prosper in an economic downturn.  Less well publicised are the examples of the many thousands of lesser known artists whose work continues to increase in price when offered at auction.
