PreS-Gr 3-This adaptation of Vladimir Suteev's story "The Conifer" introduces American readers to an endearing character. Christmas Eve finds a group of bright-eyed children busy decorating, but there is one essential ingredient missing-a tree. With no time to lose, the youngsters draft a hasty letter to Santa and build Snowwoman, the perfect winter courier. Buddy, the children's dog, offers to accompany her through the woods and help her find her way to Santa's house. As they wander through the trees, however, a rabbit jumps from the bushes, yelling, "Help...Fox is after me," and the dog joins in the chase. Left alone, Snowwoman collapses in the face of an intensifying snowstorm. Buddy returns to find only her carrot nose and stew-pot hat. When he promises never to scare Rabbit again, the forest animals help him reassemble Snowwoman and find Santa, leading to a happy ending. Arnold's bold illustrations portray exuberant children, a big and beautiful Snowwoman, and the camaraderie of the forest animals with equal verve. A chilly palette is spiked with the warm colors of the Christmas trappings, culminating in a dazzling double-page spread of the hoped-for tree. On some of the pages, additional action is communicated through several story frames. An author's note describes Suteev's career, his reputation as the "Russian Walt Disney," and the popularity of the entire Snowwoman family in Russian folklore.
