**The Beauty Of Horses**
By Peter Roberts, Triune Books, London England, Copyright 1972.
The Horses's place in our affections - as leisure companion, sporting champion, artiste in the arena and example of animal beauty and breeding - its higher than it ever was. Here are over 240 beautiful photographs, 40 of them in full colour, of horses and ponies working, playing or at sport - creatures that are useful or noble or just loveable. With these pictures, a number of experienced "equine" writers has set down fascinating observations of the horse and his ways all over the world. Valuable hints for the novice include notes on "Before You Buy".
Today, just as fifty years ago, the horse plays an important part in the lives of many people. However, through the last five decades, his role in society has changed considerably. For thousands of years the horse was a beast of burden, an animal used for hauling loads or for drawing the plough, as a mount for the warrior, a strong back to carry him into battle and to give his military master the superiority of the mounted over the merely pedestrian. Since the ancient Greeks - whose knowledge of equestrian art has never really been surpassed - the horse has been used as transport, as motive power, as a utility.
Now, after fading from the scene for a time (while the automobile took over as the major form of road transport) he is back with us, and in more than his former glory - as a leisure companion, as a sporting champion, as an artiste of the arena, as an example of animal beauty and breeding.
