Synopsis
A debut novel that recounts the twisted story of the Blackburn family. The story begins with a missionary from England who comes to an island in the Indian Ocean to 'stamp out copulation.' Instead, he ends up driving his wife crazy upon finding her in bed with a native. The son born of this union must reconcile his black blood with his family's racist beliefs and, acting out of guilt, follows in his minister father's footsteps. The other son shoulders more of the family guilt as he moves the tale into the 20th century.

Publisher's Note
This is a story of unwanted but undeniable inheritance, the tale of a family whose legacy is a curse. It begins in the late 1800s on a remote island in the Indian Ocean, where a missionary has dedicated himself to stamping out fornication among the natives. His own wife is dark-skinned, but that is no shield when she is afflicted with a curse meant for her husband. When her affliction cannot be exorcised, their ten-years-old son must be sent to England. There he will become a minister as hardhearted as his father, his missionary zeal directed against the demons he senses in the world around him. His son, however, will not have the same unforgiving strength: a poet possessed by his own demons, he will end his life wandering the halls of Bedlam.

Industry reviews
"... a dense, poetic tale of a family's emotional inheritance... The reader finishes the novel with continued admiration for Ms. Blackburn's poetic gifts."
New York Times - Michiko Kakutani (09/19/1995)

"A rare, wonderful achievement in the novel."
Leith
