First American edition as stated. Fine in fine dustwrapper. The second Judge Dee mystery to appear in the U.S. A beautiful copy with decorated endpapers, no writing or marks. Illustrated dj has no chips or tears, orig price intact (3.50), in a new protective mylar Brodart cover. 202pp.

Judge Dee must look into the murder of his predecessor. His job is complicated by the simultaneous disappearance of his chief clerk and the new bride of a wealthy local shipowner. Illustrated with ten plates drawn by the author in Chinese style. A nice Harper and Brothers bookmark is laid-in advertising this title.
