Synopsis
The takeover of the American embassy in Tehran by fundamentalist students under the control of the Ayatollah Khomeini in November 1974 was a traumatic event for Americans. It was to become an ordeal for which there was a high cost and many sobering lessons, as each day was counted by the media and the public in an ever-rising sum. The Iranian hostage crisis effectively ended the one-term presidency of Jimmy Carter, tested the resolve of the nation, and was an early warning that all was not stable in that region--and that America was a vulnerable target for terrorists. David Harris provides a comprehensive, in-depth report on the events of those years, with a trenchant analysis that is especially pertinent in the post-9/11 world. Based on prodigious research, Harris's history encompasses the events in Tehran and Washington, and includes portraits of the key players, including the hostages, the students, and leaders such as Khomeini, Carter, and his aides.

Publisher's Note
An account of the 444-day Iran hostage crisis describes how a mob of students, inspired by a then-virtually unknown Khomeini, seized the American embassy in 1979, in a chronicle that documents the year they spent as political prisoners, the contributions of such figures as Jimmy Carter and the Shah, and the doomed Desert One rescue mission. By the author of Shooting the Moon.

Industry reviews
"Harris...has crafted a beautifully written, impeccably researched and remarkably astute account that draws on candid interviews with key American and Iranian figures to examine the events from both sides of the conflict. The result is one of the most comprehensive, most compelling narratives of the hostage crisis ever written."
Nation - REZA ASLAN (12/13/2004)

"THE CRISIS is quite simply terrific to read. Harris is a master storyteller, and THE CRISIS ranks with Mark Bowden's BLACK HAWK DOWN and Robert Kaplan's BALKAN GHOSTS as a work of engrossing nonfiction....[W]hat ultimately makes this book so enjoyable is Harris's ability to sustain a reader's interest through the entire affair."
New York Times Book Review - Kenneth M. Pollack (02/27/2005)
