Gustave Flaubert (1821 – 1880) was a French writer who is counted among
the greatest Western novelists. He is known especially for his first
published novel, Madame Bovary (1857). Flaubert completed the first version
of The
Temptation of Saint Anthony in 1849, a book that influenced the
young Freud. Its story was based on the story of the 4th-century Christian
anchorite, who lived in the Egyptian desert and experienced philosophical
and physical temptations. Flaubert spent decades on the work. Part of its
fantastic mode and setting was inspired by a Brueghel painting. ~ From a
private collection. Very minimal shelf wear. Slight bump to one corner. Tight, solid and clean. Royal Octavo 6½"
x 9¾" tall, 231 pages.
A very scarce edition, especially in this condition. An true Art Deco work that caused a sensation when published in 1924 and
just as seductive today.
