The National Hockey League's monopoly on big-league hockey was threatened when the upstart World Hockey Association offered mega salaries to lure superstars like Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe. Talented Europeans like Borje Salming proved they could excel at the North American game. Expansion franchises such as the Philadelphia Flyers upset Original Six powerhouses in Stanley Cup play.

Some traditions were upheld. The best players of the decade learned their game in Canada and the United States. Homegrown future Hall of Famers like Ken Dryden, Bobby Clarke, Gilbert Perrault, Lanny McDonald, Larry Robinson, Mike Bossy, Brad Park, Guy Lafluer and Bobby Orr played some of their finest seasons. Toronto Maple Leafs Darryl Sittler set a one-game scoring record that stood the test of time. And a skinny kid named Wayne Gretzky made his first appearance in an NHL rink.
