The hobby related to firearms has a way of capturing the interest of certain enthusiasts who not only love to shoot them but also are intrigued with the inner mechanical workings and subtleties of firearm construction. These enthusiasts love to improve, fix and/or fabricate new parts or even whole firearms.
The author of this book---Steve Acker---is one such enthusiast who, by value of his superior expertise and accomplishments, has become a source of guidance and assistance to others. This book is a collection of Acker's gunsmithing and machining articles and columns. As a longtime competitive shooter, he experienced great difficulty getting gunsmith work involving machining completed to his specifications. This need began his study of machining and machine shop topics. Learning to work on his own firearms eventually lead to doing machine work and gunsmithing for other competitors and firearms owners. Here, Acker shares his knowledge of machining techniques common to firearms work, based on actual jobs he has done for his various clients.

The general gunsmith is one of only a few craftsmen who must be a jack of all trades to be a master of his craft. Machinist, toolmaker, parts fitter, woodworker, metal joiner, metallurgist, and metal finisher are terms that can be used to describe the gunsmith. The use of basic machine tools, jigs and fixtures, and specialized techniques by the gunsmith to get the job done is very similar to the home shop machinist's approach to his work. The strength of the jack of all trades is the cross fertilization of ideas between disciplines. A sharing of the gunsmith's sometimes unusual approach to solving metalworking problems will help the home shop machinist by looking at some jobs in a different way.

In this volume, step-by-step instructions, calculations, and diagrams lead the reader into projects concerning drilling the receiver for scope mounts, front sights, chambering a rifle barrel, crowning, hammer work, bluing, cutting the rifle barrel thread, welding, and many, many more. This volume also includes numerous highly detailed black and white photographs of his projects in various stages featuring guns such as the Mauser 98, Remington 700, Colt 1911, and others.

One very interesting chapter deals with building up a sub .450" MOA .223 Remington 700 short action Target Rifle with a Tubb recoil lug, H-S Precision stock and Douglas match barrel. The author guides the reader through all of the machining practices necessary to complete the rifle.
