The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time.
Since the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were illegally produced and distributed, without any regard to copyright law, or royalties paid to the composers who created these musical masterpieces.
Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. You won't even notice the difference, other than that all of the notorious errors have been fixed: the covers and typeface look the same, the song list is nearly identical, and the price for our edition is even cheaper than the original! Every conscientious musician will appreciate that these books are now produced accurately and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of the greatest tunes of all time!

Bonus!
With your purchase of all three volumes of the Hal Leonard Real Books, you will get a free copy of the revolutionary method book "Easy Touch-Style Bassics", which is a powerful new method of play, which we think you will find simpler and more powerful than other methods from the past. In addition, the method we present in this method book ("Easy Touch-Style Bassics") will also make learning simple and powerful on specialty instruments made by several other manufacturers, and for instruments utilizing several different tunings.
MAKING LEARNING EASY The key to rapid progress in this new method book is that each hand can operate in exactly the same manner to produce exactly the same notes.
On most other instruments your hands are forced to operate differently. For example, when you play a piano, to go up the scale, your left hand moves toward its thumb, and your right hand moves toward its little finger. So you must operate your two hands differently to produce the same notes! And with normal guitar or bass, you must use one hand to fret the string, and the other hand to pluck the string! Again notice that you use your two hands completely differently to play a sequence of notes, and to play the same notes higher on the neck, still the hands must be operated differently.
Think back, and remember when you were a child, the first time some grown-up asked you to pat your head while rubbing your tummy. It's inherently difficult for a human to do; we are just not built that way. So here, for the first time, is a method book that works the way a human works. Learning the "Easy Touch-Style Bassics" way is more like patting your head and patting your tummy too. Both hands operate just the same way. Much easier.
The breakthrough given in this new method book is that, with the simple approach spelled out in this book, you can use each hand in exactly the same manner to produce exactly the same notes. Once you've learned to play a scale (or a chord) with each hand, you can then practice with both hands simultaneously. And this "doubling up" during your learning time almost halves the time required to learn to actually play some music. Or, put another way, you learn twice as fast. Half as much time to learn to play twice as fast? That's a good thing.
DOES IT WORK ON GUITAR OR BASS Well, yes and no. In order to play on an instrument with both hands at the same time, it helps wonderfully if the instrument has lots of strings, so that your left hand has some strings and your right hand has some other strings. If the two hands must always be fighting over the same strings, playing gets complicated quickly.
For this reason an 8-string bass is considered the smallest instrument on which you can most easily use this simple and powerful method. (If you are an accomplished musician, you may be able to adapt the method to a normal guitar or bass, but it's not recommended; it's so much easier and more powerful to just get a specialty instrument with more strings!)
WRITTEN EXPRESSLY FOR SPECIALTY INSTRUMENTS This method has been developed specifically for specialty touch-style instruments such as the Mobius Megatar, the Warr Guitar, the Chapman Stick, the Bunker Touch-Guitar, the Box Guitar, or the Solene.
