Album notes
Personnel include: Bix Beiderbecke (cornet); Joe Venuti (vocals, violin); Hoagy Carmichael (vocals, piano); Bing Crosby (vocals); Eddie Lang (guitar); Benny Goodman (clarinet); Frankie Trumbauer (C-melody saxophone); Jack Teagarden (trombone); Jean Goldkette & His Orchestra, Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra.
Recording information: 1924 - 1930.
Some jazz fans might not feel the need to own any recordings by trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke, since there are obstacles to overcome in order to appreciate his music, such as the archaic fidelity of these 1920s and '30s sessions, or the fact that swing itself was not invented yet. However, for anyone interested in one of the less flashy but undoubtedly deep and strong influences on the genre, a look into this legend's contributions is highly recommended.
Beiderbecke is what you might call a "secret influence:" Hoagy Carmichael and Bing Crosby--both occasional collaborators of Beiderbecke --cite his lyricism as inspiration, and Lester Young (via Bix's partner Frankie Trumbauer) acknowledges the debt to his ever cool, yet singing, tone. By extension that potentially means Beiderbecke influenced artists as disparate as Paul McCartney (in his "Your Mother Should Know," "Honey Pie," "When I'm Sixty-Four" mode) to Frank Sinatra, American songbook interpreter nonpareil. This collection contains fine samples of Beiderbecke's work with several bands, including his own, between 1924 and 1930, and only lacks his charming but few piano solos, most notably "In a Mist." Otherwise, it is fair to say that THE INDISPENSABLE BIX BEIDERBECKE lives up to its name.
