Synopsis
Gogol's most famous play depicts the obsequious behavior of the subservient residents and the sycophantic officials of a small town when the protagonist, Khlestakov, is mistaken for the plenipotentiary investigator who, they have been warned, is on his way from Petersburg. Khlestakov collaborates with the townspeople in their ecstatic fictions, taking on the role of the government official. In the last act, after Khlestakov has galloped off laden with gifts and betrothed to the mayor's daughter, the provincials learn that the real inspector is about to arrive. Gogol indicates that, upon hearing this, the actors should freeze in their positions for "about a minute and a half," allowing the audience to participate in the embarrassment and horror of that moment and dissipating the levity for the sake of a larger social comment. As with "Dead Souls," Gogol credited Pushkin with the initial idea for the play. After the first performance, Czar Nicholas I was heard to comment: "Everyone has got his due, and I most of all."

Industry reviews
"The play begins with a blinding flash of lighting and ends in a thunderclap. In fact it is wholly placed in the tense gap between the flash and the crash."
"Nikolai Gogol" - Vladimir Nabokov (01/01/1944)
