About this Artwork
This artwork is a mixed media display celebrating the Intel 8086. Introduced in 1978, the 8086 is the namesake of Intel's popular x86 architecture. Although the 8086 can trace its heritage back to the Intel 8008, the 8086 is the first of the compatible processors that define the x86 architecture. In a significant redesign, Intel took the 8-bit instructions from previous generations and upgraded them to 16-bit for the 8086. Several microcomputers using the 8086 were made by AT&T, IBM, Tandy, Wang, and others. Also, the most famous microcomputer, the IBM PC, used an 8-bit version of the 8086, called the 8088.
The fully functional chip is mounted with threads and is surrounded by an enlarged diagram of the chip with the electrical signal designations for each of its leads. |

About ChipScapesTM
ChipScapesTM artist Steve Emery created this artwork. ChipScapesTM are digital photographs taken of computer chips. These microscopic chip landscapes, or ChipScapesTM, are created by photographing silicon chips. Steve uses macro lenses, microscopes and special lighting to create these photographs. To the naked eye, computer chips are mostly gray, the color of the silicon and aluminum used to create them. However, chips are built in layers like a cake. These layers are separated by glass, so it is possible to see down into the chip. These different layers create refractions of light, like a prism. With magnification, special lighting, and image processing, it is possible to coax different colors from these chips. Each chip has different "personalities" under different lighting conditions.

Narrative Excerpts
"The Intel 8086 marked the beginning of the 16-bit generation for Intel. Continuing the evolution from the 8008, to the 8080, to the 8085, the 8086 still provided source code backward compatibility. The 8088, which was an 8-bit version of the 8086, was chosen for the IBM PC specifically for its backward compatibility. The two most popular 8-bit microprocessors were the Intel 8080 and the Zilog Z80, which was also based on the 8080. ..." |
