About this Artwork

This artwork is a mixed media display celebrating the Intel i860 (80860). When the i860 became available in 1989 and microprocessors were beginning to introduce mainframe-like functionality, the i860 was in a class by itself. While the RISC i860 had elements of 32-bit,  64-bit, and 128-bit designs, it is  considered a 64-bit microprocessor. The i860 reached a major milestone in microprocessor development by being the first to have over 1 million transistors. The first generation of the i860 operated at 40MHz and the second, the XP, at 50. The moniker of Supercomputer on a Chip came from the i860's supercomputer-like performance, and capabilities such as: instruction pipelining, extensive floating point processing, graphics processing, and vector processing.

The fully functional chip is mounted with threads. This artwork also includes an interesting comparision of the chip technology of the Intel 4004 (the first microprocessor) and the Intel i860.

About ChipScapesTM

ChipScapesTM artist Steve Emery created this artwork. ChipScapesTM are digital photographs taken of computer chips. These microscopic chip landscapes, or ChipScapesTM, are created by photographing  silicon chips. Steve uses macro lenses, microscopes and special lighting to create these photographs. To the naked eye, computer chips are mostly gray, the color of the silicon and aluminum used to create them. However, chips are built in layers like a cake. These layers are separated by glass, so it is possible to see down into the chip. These different layers create refractions of light, like a prism. With magnification, special lighting, and image processing, it is possible to coax different colors from these chips. Each chip has different "personalities" under different lighting conditions.

Close-up Study

Narrative Excerpt

"Just as the Intel 4004, the first microprocessor, is often compared to the ENIAC, the first computer, the i860 is often compared to the Cray-1, the first supercomputer.  In 1976, the Cray-1 operated at about 80MHz and the initial i860 only at 40MHz. However, the i860 had a number of architectural improvements over the Cray-1. The nominal operating speed of the Cray-1 was about 80 millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS). The i860, if all the code was written just right and no pipelining stalls encountered, could just reach 80 MFLOPS.  ..."
