Detailed item info
Synopsis
Arley, a 14-year-old honor student in Texas, begins writing to Dillon LeGrande, an inmate of the nearby correctional facility. Gradually, she falls in love with him, and they are secretly married. When she becomes pregnant, she is rejected by her family and moves in with an activist lawyer, a woman who is having troubles with her boyfriend, a death row attorney. Dillon escapes from prison and goes on a crime spree, and while Arley waits for a reunion with him she must cope with not only a forest fire but her maddened and violent sister.

Publisher's Note
A naive teenage girl in south Texas, Arlie falls in love with her prison pen pal--a handsome and charming young felon who romances her through his letters. After a love affair that defies convention, they marry and have a child--all while the father is still in prison. But when he escapes to claim his family, what started as a passionate romance turns into a terrifying ordeal of obsession and desire. Arlie's only hope is a fiercely dedicated public aid lawyer who is more of a mother figure than Arlie has ever known, and the only one who can avert impending disaster.

Industry reviews
"Mitchard's airtight craft is evident in how well 'The Most Wanted' works..."
San Francisco Chronicle Book Review - Georgia Jones-Davis (05/17/1998)

"Part thriller and part romance, [it] tries to keep quite a few narrative balls in the air, juggling jailhouse love, teen pregnancy, escaped convicts, death row lawyers, biological clocks, and the whole capricious character of the lone star state of Texas....A big, readable novel, but also one neither surprising nor penetrating enough to be especially memorable."
Kirkus Reviews  (04/01/1998)
