Publisher's Note
Facing a fanatical enemy in Europe and in the Pacific, U.S. planners turned to a new kind of warrior--daring swimmers who could knock out mine, map out enemy beaches, and pave the way for Allied naval assaults. With a few extraordinary men, the U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams went to war. Now, the commander of this unit takes readers into their world in this first book in the Special Warfare series. Photo insert.

Industry reviews
Originally published in 1956, the new edition retains its classic standing as an insider view of the US Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) operations during World War II and in Korea. Fane developed the training and operational techniques used in World War II amphibious campaigns and laid the groundwork for today's SEALS. Chronicling his experiences and those of other UDT experts, he walks the reader through scouting missions in mined reefs and under fire, clearing invasion approaches before assault. Because of the dramatic content it's not surprising that Moore, who coauthored the book, was head of the story and script department at CBS Television. No bibliography. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
