The Operational Art of War II : Modern Battles 1956-2000 represents the most recent of the sequential battle strategy games in the The Operational Art Of War series. The previous game involved scenarios, weapons and soldiers from the 1939-1955 period while this release focuses on conflict in the years between 1956 and 2000. The missions in this turn-based strategy game take place in several theatres of war, including Vietnam, the Middle East, and West Germany.

The arena is depicted as a hexagon-grid gaming board with iconic pieces on a massive battlefield. In turn, you have to amass your forces, attack, reinforce, or retreat before your enemy gets to do the same. Each unit is represented by one of the hexagons and information on that unit is easily accessed by clicking on it to reveal a small box in the top right hand corner of the screen. This box gives details of identity, health, movement, and whether the unit is in attack or defense mode.

Each turn can actually represent a time period between six hours and several weeks. Each unit has special qualities, depending on the battle selected and campaign undertaken, and all of these skills and capabilities are detailed in a large manual which serves as an instant reference source.

In addition to the standard, single-player war game, the program can also be used in Play-By-E-Mail (PBEM) mode that allows you to declare war on and go to battle against other players on the Internet.
