Synopsis
The second of Neil Simon's memoirs, this volume covers his life from the death in 1973 of his first wife, Joan, to the time of his writing this book. He discusses the trials of the three marriages he made (to only two women) after Joan's death, his struggles to be a good father to his two daughters, and, most of all, his varying success as a playwright. Although he wrote a string of immensely popular plays, he never received the sort of critical acclaim that he hoped for, and he expresses his disappointment with not achieving the status of his heroes Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neill.
