This book was written and self published during the early 1980s by Leonard Goldberg, a former Boeing engineer, bicycle shop owner, inventor, composer and an altogether remarkable man. Leonard was a good friend, which is how I happen to have some of his books on hand. Leonard is the only person I've known that I consider to be a genius.
The Spoking Word is unique among wheel building books because it is the only such book that treats the subject as an engineering problem. It examines a variety of creative solutions to the problem of designing wheels. Each design is subjected to mathematical analysis. Many ideas that would seem to have merit are shown to be inferior. Although it was printed over 20 years ago, the bicycle industry has not yet caught up to this book. I will mention that an unpublished revised and expanded manuscript exists, in case YOU happen to be a publisher. Leonard passed on recently, leaving the manuscript to me. This is your opportunity to publish a groundbreaking new book.
The book may be initially intimidating to the casual reader, but each new idea is developed from easily understood concepts. A careful reader can progress to the frontiers of wheel building theory without recourse to other books on mathematics or engineering. In order to understand the book fully, a basic knowledge of high school mathematics will be helpful. The book examines ideas that are successful and ideas that are unsuccessful. You will be amused to see how many unsuccessful ideas have been incorporated into many so called "state of the art" wheels that have been, and in some cases, still are on the market. I'm a professional bicycle mechanic, and have built many of the successful designs discussed in the book. They have always worked well. The spoke length formula is useful to me on a daily basis. I never need to use charts, computers or software to calculate spoke lengths. I just use an inexpensive scientific calculator. It is nice to be self sufficient for spoke length calculations.
The book lacks page numbers. Several people have wondered what the page count is. I'd estimate it as more than 150, but less than 200 pages. The book is softbound.
This book was self published in extremely limited quantities. It is one of the rarest books on bicycling technology in existence. You will have a very difficult time locating a copy anywhere else. I suggest that you get one while you still can.
I'm happy to ship internationally for the actual cost, plus $1 for packing materials. In many, but not all parts of the world, the cost is $12.00 including packing. (Use the shipping calculator for an exact price.) Domestic shipping is done by media mail and costs around $3.50 or $4.00 including the mailing envelope. Media Mail is slow, so be patient.

$12.00 is the price for one copy of the book. Additional copies can be had for the same price each. I can send two copies for the same shipping cost as one copy.
