The Squares of the City
is a tour-de-force, a disciplined exercise peopled originally by
wooden or ivory or jade figurines, now fleshed and clothed and
given dramatic life in battle as old as the classic conflict of chess.
But these are real people. When heads roll, blood gouts out and
drenches the remaining players while they watch in horrified
fascination - until their turn comes.
For it is a real game.
And the players - especially the players - cannot tell the outcome.
Even when their lives depend upon it.

Condition:
This book is in Very Good condition.
Being 44 or so years old, it has a definite old book smell.
The pages have no tears or marks that I can find other than
the very last few pages having tiny dogears to their bottom
corners, and the pages and covers do have yellowing due to age.
The edges of the covers and pages are a bit shelf-worn,
and there seem to be a few very small stains on the bottom edge
of the book (on the page ends). The insides of the front and back
covers seem to have some staining as well (or at least
uneaven yellowing).
The front and back covers have a few minor nicks along the
edges, with a crease on the top and bottom corners of the left back,
and the front has some minor creasing near and parallel to
the spine (probably due to reading) as well as a bend at the
lower right. The spine has very minor edge wearing
and a minor crease (from reading?) along part of its length,
but the binding is tight.
