The Story of the Covenanter Church
by A. Balfour Symington

The Protestant Reformation, though it began in Germany, spread rapidly throughout Europe, including the British Isles. From these Reformation ideas came a group of Christians in Scotland who struggled to find acceptance and love for their Protestant faith, over the predominant Roman Church ideas of their day. As church and state were greatly intertwined, the Christians drew up a document in 1581 known as The National Covenant. The idea of a covenant was derived from the Bible and thus the Christians became known as the Covenanters. Their covenant has been called the Magna Charta of Scotland and sought to protect Protestant freedom as well as create a Protestant foundation for their legal system. This is their story, from the birth of Protestantism, to the religious and poltical struggles of the 16th and 17th century.

Originally published in 1909 with 54 8½ x 11 pages. Reprinted 2007.

Excerpt from Chapter Three:

The people, however, who had learnt from Scripture that kings are but God's instruments for the government and protection of the nation, and as much bound to obey just laws as their subjects, resolved no longer to practice the passive obedience enforced by former Popish sovereigns; and seeing the young king [King James VI of Scotland] thus early disposed to wrest from them their newfound liberties, they wisely decided to take some measures for securing them. With this view, they drew up the National Covenant in 1581.

This famous deed should be as familiar as the alphabet to every member of the Covenanter Church. It formed the centre of a struggle that lasted for about one hundred and fifty years, and in Scotland alone it cost the lives of eighteen thousand of the noblest men and women that ever brought renown to any country. In it were first proclaimed those principles upon which the British Constitution is founded—those securities for civil and religious liberty that have made Britain the envy of the world.
