Wonderful piece of work by David Lynch !
The Straight Story is definitely the straightest story of David Lynch so far. It is also among his best works and amazingly beautiful and peaceful depiction of old man not willing to give up the hope and his quest to solve things with his brother and forgive him before it's too late. The film is written by Mary Sweeney (the editor of Lynch films like Mulholland Drive (2001) and Lost Highway (1997)) and John Roach.
The film tells the true life story of Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth in a great and memorable performance), a 73-year-old man who gets to hear his brother (Harry Dean Stanton) is severely sick and may die soon. He has not talked to him for over ten years because of some disagreement and controversy they had while they were younger and wilder and not yet quite willing or capable to understand certain values of life. Now Alvin sees he has to go and see Lyle no matter what it takes. He has a bad sight and can't drive. All he can drive is his lawn mower which he finally decides to use like perhaps no other has used before: travel with the vehicle to see his brother many hundreds of miles away through Mississippi and many dangerous hills on the road. His daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek in an equally great performance) does not fight against because as Alvin says "she understands" and thus lets Dad go and fulfill his mission.
The film is so warm and delightful but also pretty sad in a positive, not a depressing way. This is as far away from the usual dark visions of Lynch as ever possible and so it also shows the wide range talent of this unique American surrealist film maker.
