The story takes place in the south just after the civil war. A time when the distruction could be seen everywhere. A time when the slaves were hired to work the plantations. A time when Yankee schoolmarms came to the South as ministering angels, martyrs, or to find husbands. Hester Snow found herself on the plantation of Seven Chimneys. The book ends with an investigation into the death of the plantation owner. Hester's husband and enemy. This is an unique story filled with insight about the lives of the people that would work to rebuilt the South.
