THIRTY YEARS ON THE LINE
Leo Stapleton, 1982
When the Deputy arrived it was obvious it was an extremely dangerous situation. The truck had turned over and was pouring raw gasoline, 7800 gallons of it, into the field and down onto the busy expressway. There were several things that had to be done rapidly. Shut off traffic on the expressway, evacuate buildings, set up foam lines. A reporter walks up, pen and pad in hand. "What time did this start, Chief?" The Deputy almost faints. "Lookit, I'm gonna tell you something nice and quietly, OK?" "Yes, go ahead, Chief." "You are smoking a cigarette and standing in gasoline. Hold it. Don't drop it. Just turn around and walk away as quickly as you can ..." This is one of many true tales of life in the Boston Fire Department. Photographes by Bill Noonan.
