| | Album notes | Personnel includes: Lester Young (tenor saxophone); Billie Holiday, Jimmy Rushing (vocals); Earle Warren, Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Buck Clayton, Harry James (trumpet); Dickie Wells (trombone); Benny Goodman (clarinet); Count Basie, Teddy Wilson (piano); Freddie Green (guitar); Walter Page (bass); Jo Jones, Kenny Clarke (drums). Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Long before the concept of "cool" or "west coast" jazz came into vogue, Lester Young embodied its spirit. No one can dispute that his light, airy, style and behind-the-beat phrasing changed the future of the tenor saxophone; he set a precedent for what we now call mainstream jazz. In short, this chronologically-arranged collection of recordings traces Young's (or Pres, as he is alternatively known) musical maturity. Young is heard here in his prime: from 1936-1943. Young has the ability to contribute to virtually any swing setting. On selections such as "I Must Have That Man" and "All Of Me," Pres accompanies, and indeed complements, the great vocalist Billie Holiday. Other sessions derive from a Carnegie Hall jam with Benny Goodman's all-stars, and with Count Basie, the band leader with whom Young is most associated. No matter what the environment, Young shines; all 17 tracks serve as testament to this.
