Thomas Hart Benton, American painter & artist, (April 15, 1889-January 19, 1975) was born in Neosho, Missouri, U.S.A. was a student at the Art Insitute of Chicago, studied in Paris at the Academie Julian in 1909, where he met Diego Rivera and Stanton MacDonald-Wright. Returning to New York in 1913, he worked as a draftsman in the U.S. Navy. During the 1920's Benton declared himself an "enemy of modernism" and began painting in a style called regionalism which is viewed as naturalistic and representational. His sympathies for the working class and small farmer working in the path of industrial change is evident in the subject of this important mural.
