*** ORIGINAL THOMAS ROWLANDSON PRINT!!!***
ca 1820
Do you like Monty Python or other British humor and satire? If you do, you need to know about Dr. Syntax!
It is my opinion that he should be considered the "Grandfather of Monty Python" for his satirical art!
This antique print is one of Thomas Rowlandson's Dr. Syntax series.
It is entitled "Dr. Syntax at Free Mason's Hall."
Text along the bottom of the image says "Drawn by Rowlandson" and beneath the title,
the text along the edge says, "Published August 1, 1820 at R. Ackermann's 101 Strand."
The entire print measures approximately 8 3/4 inches by 5 3/8 inches.
The image itself is about 4 1/4 inches by 7 inches.
The image is beautifully colored.
Here is some information about Thomas Rowlandson:
This delightful print is from the famous "Tours of Dr. Syntax." These tours chronicle the various escapades of the fictional 19th-century English clergyman, Dr. Syntax. The animated drawing and wonderful facial expressions
make them excellent examples of Rowlandson¹s parodic work from the great age of English caricature. True to the comic muse, Rowlandson reversed the process of illustration by first drawing a series of sketches, then
commissioning James Combe to write a narrative about the silly things that are going on. These tours were a satire on William Gilpin¹s series of picturesque journeys to different parts of England with emphasis on
landscape pictures and flattering prose into which Rowlandson inserted his stumbling parson and a wide range of landscape and decorative arts portrayal.
Thomas ROWLANDSON was born in London, England in 1756. He was the son of an unsuccessful merchant, but he received a decent education and travelled extensively in Europe and the British Isles.
He was to become on the of most famous political lampoonists and caricaturists of his age - the era of King George III. There was little censorship at the time & some 'vicious' cartoons were drawn of political figures. Even Royalty did not escape. Rowlandson turned his talent as a draughtsman, etcher and engraver of aquatints, to good advantage. Perhaps his most enduring works are the plates drawn for the very successful 'DR SYNTAX' series, of which this print is a fine example. Rowlandson was employed by Rudolph ACKERMANN (1764-1834), who was a publisher for many contemporary artists, including Henry Alken. Their reputation for the highest quality hand coloured aquatints rests on the considerable range of fine topographical and other subjects portrayed in their numerous publications. William Coombe wrote the stories in the form of prolonged poems.
It would seem that Rowlandson gambled away the earnings from his profession! He died in 1827.
A fabulous piece of historical satire! If you like caricatures, satire, or British art, this piece belongs on your wall.
Sold unframed. It is in very good condition.
There are the remnants of two pieces of tape on the back of the print--not because there are any tears,
but because someone must have used them to secure the print to a frame (from which it was removed long ago!)
I did not try to remove them, but they are old. There are no tears and the image is clear and beautiful.
A wonderful addition to your British caricature collection, or a perfect gift for someone who is into freemasonry or masonic groups.
