This "Marconigram" is a rare artifact from history's most famous sea disaster, the sinking of the Titanic. The telegram, handwritten in pencil, reads as follows: "(To) Mrs. Carter...Philadelphia, Meet us (with) hats, coats, for all." On April 14-15, 1912 the White Star luxury liner Titanic left England on its maiden voyage to New York City. Considered unsinkable, it collided with an iceberg in icy waters off Newfoundland where more than 1500 people perished. The Carpathia was the only ship to respond to Titanic's distress signals and assisted as best it could in recovering survivors. Once aboard survivors filled out these telegram messages that were transmitted non-stop by Carpathia's wireless operator and the surviving Titanic wireless operator aboard the Carpathia, to loved ones letting them know of their fate. This is one example of an original message that is stamped "Not Transmitted" as some were not. Measuring 9 X 5.5. |
