Track IR Pro a little expensive for the quality

Track IR Pro. is a little expensive as it is made of CHEAP PLASTIC.. The clip on the Pro Clip seems to be very cheaply made. It is not a strong spring clip nor is it made of metal. It is made of a cheap feeling plastic. The connections for it should actually be a couple feet longer as I had to get an extension to plug it into a USB port on my computer. It is working but I had to contact the manufacturer to get it working right. Mike of their support team answered my e mail for support in less then 10 minutes and with my letting him take temporary control of my computer as I watch and he explained what he was doing and had me up and working in no time. He even went further and explained to me how to adjust a few different things. The support was very good... no complaints at all with them. I use to for a couple different sim games and it is working very well.. Actually better then I was expecting it to. It really does save a lot of mouse moving and or button control clicking depending on the game of sim you are running. It is a little expensive though and I really think they can sale it cheaper then they do and still make a nice profit as more would be buying it. I said yes under good quality as the camera is sensitive enough to do a good job. As I said.. the PRO CLIP which connects to head phones is cheaply made.. It does come with a attachment that will fit onto a base ball cap BUT,,, I do not actually like wearing a CAP when inside and playing a video game... Maybe they should make and include a head band for it or a head band that the Pro Clip will connect to instead of just having it clip to a set of head phones as many people do not have or use head phones... I actually purchased a set of headphones just to be able to use the Pro Clip.

Great Potential but Interface and Setup Frustrating

The product works, if you are willing to go through the frustrating and unintuitive setup process. I bought it to work with the Microsoft Flightsim 2020, and it does, once you spend 40 minutes lining up the monitor-mounted sensor with the one on your headphones. Once I got it working, I could pan around just as I had hoped, and the speed sliders allow you to keep the motion in a range that allows clicking on control panel features is easy. Also, the TrackIR works well simultaneously with the standard flightsim mouse controls, saving you from leaning awkwardly forward if all you want to do is see a gauge reading more clearly. So, all good, right? Next day, however, I loaded everything, and my view was backward, looking over the tail of the aircraft. It took me an hour to get it facing forward, and tweaking the position of the sensor didn't help. Everything remained skewed. So, just to get flying, I turned the TrackIR off. That was when I realized there really wasn't much advantage to having it for the flightsim. The mouse and keyboard quickly changes the views in-out-up-down, and I didn't miss the TrackIR at all. I am going to try again to set it up, but I suspect I will end up passing it to those folks who run around virtual battlefields shooting at things. It should be ideal for them, if they can get it to stay stable from one session to the next.

  • Makes flying sims much better.

This is an excellent product. I mainly play flight simulators and it works very well with recent editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. It also works very easily with Dovetail Flight School and Prepar3D. You need to turn on an in-game setting in X-Plane 10 but it works there as well, although not as well as the other mentioned games. It has a few weaknesses. The camera falls off a bit easily from the mount, and it moves around too easily if the cable is not secured to its back. In addition, the hat clip mode for the software gets distracted by background lighting and the clip itself is not super accurate. I invested in the TrackClip Pro peripheral and its accuracy is MUCH better than the hat clip, although I will still keep the hat clip in case of emergency. Finally, it seems you need to move the sensor further back for best accuracy than what I have in my home setup (my flat screen display is 3 feet from where I sit). Fortunately I have a second hard drive behind my main display and I was able to position my camera further back. I can't vouch for other types of games that I play with view panning controls as I haven't been playing them recently. For the recent flight sims, it makes taxiing, sightseeing, and landing approaches much, much better because you can keep both hands on other controls and not waste them using the mouse and space bar. I am very satisfied with this product and I highly recommend this to others looking for a similar solution.

  • Overpriced? Yes. Yet far better than DIY

Very expensive for what you get. The housing, mount, IR LEDs and USB cord could all be improved in quality. In function the TrackIR 5 is better than what I had accomplished with my home brew endeavors. I find the software worth while and the camera does out perform what I had achieved prior with a couple web cams and even a Wii remote, (pain in the ass). I have only used it thus far with the included hat clip with the reflective tape. I will dig up a homemade IR transmitting set at some point soon. I had expected more in the realm of range but hope that will be different wihen I am not stuck relying on the TrackIR's IR emissions being reflected back to it. The setup is on a 40" display in my living room. When trying to exceed the 2'-5' recommended distance I have had issues. This is not a problem when running Project Cars. I have a little table nice and close for that setup. The bottom line: Great camera; not very bright IR illumination; Good software; Glad I bought it!

  • My review of TrackIR 5

This thing works great and really adds to the sense of realism when using it with flight sims and other games that it works with. It is over-priced in my opinion, but it is easy to set up and easy to get used to in flight sims. Much better than using the hat switch to move the view around.

  • Good for flying, infantry still a work in progress

Works great for any flying. It give you the ability to look all around just as you would do in a real air craft. Helps with lining up with the end of the runway. You have the ability to look out the window and see what is under the air craft, particularly helpful with helicopters. Not so great for infantry movement. It gives the ability to look around as you move without having to change your body position. Especially good for reconnaissance without giving away your position with unnecessary movement. I have not yet learned how to look to the sides of a door before going out, but I am still working on that skill.

  • Better in most ways; a few disadvantages too.

This replaces the metal clip type and gives far more head movement before the 'flip' (loss of head tracking) It's hard wired (cable) and very easy to instal. Pros - 1. Far more ability to track the head movement in the extreme areas (sides and up/down) which if you're doing Flight Sims, helps a lot. 2. The smoothness of tracking seems better. (due to powered IR LEDs on Pro Clip) 3. The clip arrangement works well for Headsets. Cons - 1. Expensive. 2. Can be cumbersome clipped onto headset 3. Is hard wired so, a loss of freedom if you like wireless headsets.

  • Looks cheap, works great

When you open the box, you may wonder what you just bought. The mount for the camera didn't fit my monitor. It is designed for thicker monitors than mine. It will adjust from about 1 1/2" to close to 3". I ended up using tape to attach the mount to the top of my monitor. Works fine. I downloaded a profile for my game, followed instructions from that user, and was up and running in my game in minutes. Be careful of IR sources in the room behind you. It did not work at first, then I watched the window in the software that you have to download. It showed that if my head moved in a certain direction, the light bulb in my room showed up as another IR source. Turned it off and viola, it works great. The system looks cheap, but it works better than I expected after fine tuning my setup.

  • A Great Alternative for VR

I had been an early adopter of VR, from an Oculus Rift CV1 to Valve Index on all of my simulators. Either it is racing in Aesstto Corsa, leisure flying in X-Plane 11 or intense dog fight in DCS, I enjoyed the immersion for being in a HMD while driving with my steering wheel or flying with my HOTAS. However, as I fully went invested into a sim cockpit with MSFS2020, I was looking for an alternative to way to fly with physical hardware module rather than just a flight stick. Therefore, I started using OpenTrack with my phone while I fly to maintain head tracking on screen. But the resolution just wasn't high enough neither was the precision. I was skeptical to buy into TrackIR, thinking that a dedicated device will not be that much better than my old iPhone X IR camera; boy was I wrong. TrackIR 5 has much higher resolution tracking, thus yelling for a much smoother experience. It is also more customizable with its dedicated software to set non-linear track point and set curve on how fast the device track with specific ramping/easing on each axis. With this, I can see on screen, move around and look at my surround on screen in flight, while being able to manipulate hardware instruments that surround me. While it is not a perfect 1:1 tracking you would have in VR, this is a must have if you fly in a sim cockpit like myself. Some had already mentioned, do try to get the basic version without the IR lamp module, the passive hat clip has work very well for me except in bright day light where IR is bouncing off of a lot of surfaces, in a dimmer environment or at night, the head clip was all I need.

  • Inexpensive "lightweight VR"

This is a great product for flight sims and other games. Just read various game forums and reviews for the specific game you are interested in. This is much cheaper than ultra wide monitor (and better than that), much much cheaper than triple monitors or VR. So it suits my needs fine. It takes a bit of setup especially to tweak it to your particular needs and likes.
