This is a museum worthy massive Sterling Silver William IV oval tray with 2 handles, made by one of the most successful silversmiths ever: Benjamin Smith II. Made in London 1833 ca. 4,5 Kilogramm !! 925 Sterling Silver. 74 cm long (without handles 64 cm) and 48 cm deep. The best quality you can get.
Very clear hallmarks on the back: makers mark for Benjamin Smith II (see Grimwade 230), Sterling Lion, leopard head for London, sovereign head of William IV and letter S for 1833/34. Benjamin Smith II was one of the most highly regarded silversmiths ever, especially famous for his trays and excellent engravings - which can be admired also on this tray. As well as Paul Storr, he was producing mainly for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the famous purveyor to the Royal British Court. Trays of such quality are very hard to find. If so, they are sold for a fortune on Sotheby`s or Christies. Please feel free to check on that ... The tray is in excellent condition! Near pristine. Only very minor surface wear. The engravings are extremely crisp. No monograms, no removals! There is absolutely no "give" whatever to the center of this tray. Even when held completely on end. It can easily support a heavy 5 or 6 piece tea set. To give a better idea of the size, you will find one picture showing the tray displayed with a large teapot on burner (24 cm high, 30 cm long) and 2 tea caddies. IN THIS AUCTION YOU ONLY BID ON THE TRAY!! I am located in Germany, so please contact me for shipping costs before buying, depending on where you live (USA is 50 $ via DHL/Deutsche Post, not insured unless paypal). Other shipments like UPS, also fully insured, can be arranged. Feel free to send questions also to carree3@hotmail.com Don`t miss other items in my ebay shop! |
