The Luba Eastern live in the Katanga Province in the neighborhood of the Hemba, Buyu, Zela and other Luba subgroups. Round mask with striations is the most famous of the Luba Kifwebe masks, made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society that the Luba borrowed from the Songye. "Kifwebe" means "Mask" in the Songye language. Luba and Songye Kifwebe masks have in common the face generally covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth most often square and protruding. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Kifwebe masks were used during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. Tribal African Mask from Ghana. Great talking point, or add it to your existing collection. |
