Male Ancestor / Powerful chief / Tshokwe / Congo Republic border Zambia / H 33 1/2 inches / Age: 1943 , tested / wood, antelope horns, animal skin, power packs, fiber, metal, cowry shells, dark patina

The elaborate Crown indicates his royal status, and identifies him as a chief or Mwana Ngana , meaning " overseer or lord of the land. A Maltese cross, outlined by 5 nails with  large round heads  ( four arranged in a square, with one in the center )  mark the forehead of thisTshokwe ancestral, chieftain figures,

The Tshokwe do not have a paramount chief. Instead they are divided into chiefdoms, led by a land chief the Mwana Ngana, which means: overseer or lord of the land. He is assisted by wise elders and ritual specialists. The Tshokwe were matrilineal with linages fragmented over a large area. Nevertheless all are traceable to clan ancestors. The chief has supreme authority, but the ruler, not the chief, is the absolute master. Chibinda Ilunga ( Tschibinda Ikunga), the legendary chief who founded the Lunda Empire by marrying the daughter of a military chief of this group, is according to the Tshokwe, the person from whom all their leaders descend, He revitalized the Lunda notion of royalty, and introduced the concept of " sacred kingship", and he transformed the  matrilineal system  to a patrilineal system.

Exceptional pieces of African (art) works are not distinguished solely by their age, but by the power of esthetic expression. Such artifacts are not easily found, and they are certainly not readily picked up in Africa and shipped abroad " by the container". Most exceptional pieces are part of established collections, and only become available as a consequence of death or other changing circumstances. We specialize in finding those pieces, and offer them to our customers at very competitive prices.

All of our artifacts are genuine, authentic, and of exceptional quality. We make statements regarding age, and or provenance only if they can be substantiated. Accordingly we provide SPECTROSCOPIC TESTS, performed by the Museum of Art and Science in Milano, Italy to determine the age of selected valuable wooden artifacts. If our pieces should fail to meet with our customers approval, we will readily accept returns,
