Tuareg Touareg Carved Tent Posts
Similar poles are presented in UCLA Fowler's The Art of Being Tuareg, which notes "Tent poles are used to build the tent, to hold up the tent wall mats, and to hang leather bags and clothing. After leather, wood is perhaps the most important material in Saharan daily life, and is used for the poles and beams of the nomads' tents on which are hung bags, saddles, bows and whips, as well as bed frames, dishes, cups, milking bowls, spoons, mortars and pestles. Various types of wood are available, despite the encroaching desertification of the oases. Along with tent poles, beds are the most elaborately decorated wooden items in the life of the nomads. When in use, these beds are covered with two or three mats woven of grass and leather strips. They are light enough to transport, upside down but in one piece, on the back of a camel." See Africa: The Art of a Continent.

Tuareg Touareg Tribal History
Descendants of the ancient Berber race, the Tuareg remained fiercely independent through their refusal to integrate with other desert tribes and the retention of many of their pre-Islamic rituals and customs. Feared raiders of the desert, renowned for their caravan convoys of trade (and stolen) goods, the veiled Tuareg men saw robbery as an honorable occupation. Even today Tuareg women go about unveiled, displaying their fair complexions and occasional blue eyes, and are free to chose and/or divorce their husbands - all signs of freedom and status unheard of in the Muslim world. See Africa Adorned by Angela Fisher for a detailed account of this fascinating culture.
