Contents Preface Introduction History of English domestic architecture The half-timber house in England Us the Half-timber style suited to our needs today? The charm of old work and how we may obtain it The choice of styles English and American house plans Methods of construction Exterior details Interior details.
Preface: This book is not intended as a technical treatise. It has not been written with the professional reader in mind and is without pretention to be a serious contribution to the history of architecture. It is addressed primarily to the general reader having an interest in house building or to those who have in mind building for themselves. If it serves to call the attention of any such to this English work or to arouse their interest in the matter as a whole, it will have fulfilled its purpose. In the mind of the author it is further meant to be at once a protest against the stereotyped use of certain historical styles for contemporary use, and a plea for a greater freshness and virility than is often found in the work of today.
Rocketbrain review: This is a wonderful book, perhaps a remembrance of simple times past or perhaps a progenitor of times to come and the restoration of comfortable country living that is the coming trend.
Human needs have not changed much over millennia and eventually, for each environment, folks realize that the same basic design requirements are there to make a comfortable domicile and residential experience for folks.
Here we find a book full of design ideas and hints and discussion of the half timber home genre, a kind of structure of strength and grace to fit well with a gentle kind country life warmth, and a sensuous living experience.
Half timber means partly timbered and partly stucco or other construction.
Written and illustrated with drawings and pictures back in 1912, it is even more relevant and useful today than when it was published.
Today many of the tradecraft bodies of knowledge have faded and here we find them available for restoration or new construction or design work, easily accessible.
While much of the examples and illustrations are of English Style country homes there is honest discussion of the context to American Style and versions as well and great discussion of both the style issues and the practical issues of such designs and technology solutions.
The detailed discussions of construction methods is sufficient to assist any architect or engineer in creating detailed drawings and methods for new designs evolved of these styles and methods.
Wonderful clear descriptions, illustrations, discussion, and photographs make all crystal clear.
Whether you are a home-owner, an architect, engineer, historian, or just love great design and architecture for the art and beauty this book will become a favorite rapidly.
For me, it brought back memories of Cambridge, wood smalls, the fog, the cool mist of morning, the hymenia smells all the makings of an English country morning.
Even if you have never been there, I bet it will do the same for you, you can almost get lost in these images the sense of a lifestyle that they suggest.
Enjoy this one, a wonderful book, practical at a technical level, delightful at an aesthetic level.
