Highly important Tugra of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz (1830-1876), handwritten on vellum, mid 19th century, Turkey. Size: 7” x 9” Black ink calligraphy executed on fine, thin, white vellum. There are glue marks and sewing holes where it was attached to the next piece of vellum (please see images). The tugra on this piece of vellum is the top portion of a larger court document known as a firman or berat, which were official court edicts. The tugra is the official Sultan’s seal and could only be used under his authority. More importantly, this tugra was executed by hand (most likely by a court calligrapher, not the Sultan himself) and is not printed. Abdulaziz was the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and he reigned from 1861-1876 (deposed). He was the first reigning Sultan to travel to Western Europe, including a visit to England in 1867. The document is in great condition with crease marks and slight abrasion (lightening) to the  ink at the creases.
