Twin Peaks 4890 36 track tape drive

The Twin Peaks 4890 Cartridge Tape Drive is a 3490E-compatible product specifically designed for midrange mission-critical, high-performance automated storage management solutions.

Twin Peaks' architecture is built on StorageTek's successful TimberLine tape subsystem, including a common head, read/write electronics and associated microcode. This design will offer the possibility of a future upgrade path to near TimberLine's performance while maintaining data interchange compatibility. TimberLine provides a native tape transfer rate of 6 megabytes per second, double that of all competitive 3490E products.

The 4890 uses TimberLine technology and ICRC to allow up to 2.4 gigabytes (3:1 data compression) of storage per cartridge, decreasing the number of cartridges required for multi-volume data sets and back-up times as well. The 4890 drive reads and writes in 36-track format, and can read earlier 18-track tapes to ensure compatibility with industry standards. The 4890's 36-track technology can eliminate rewind for full-cartridge volumes. Its high-speed search capability also improves the efficiency of data recovery; the 4 megabyte data buffer (largest of the competitive offerings) ensures improved subsystem access. Combined with fast and wide SCSI burst rate of 20 megabytes per second or a FIPS transfer rate of 4.5 megabytes per second, the 4890 offers optimum data throughput.

Transition from a manual method of operation to unattended automation can be achieved by adding an optional 15-cartridge integrated library. The integrated library in combination with the Twin Peaks 4890 will provide the highest capacity product in its class for unattended backup capacity of up to 36 gigabytes. The Twin Peaks 4890 is a cost-effective investment in 36-track technology.

The Twin Peaks 4890 is the first small form factor product designed to bring midrange customers the automation level found in StorageTek's enterprise tape drives. Twin Peaks also is planned to integrate with the 9710  thus providing an additional growth path for a customer's initial investment.

Twin Peaks' design includes StorageTek's common command interface (CCI), which provides investment protection by providing interface flexibility. In addition to the current SCSI and FIPS offerings.
