"The Harry Shuffle" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. "Two Teardrops" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. On TWO TEARDROPS--his first post-"comeback" album--Steve Wariner explores a broad range of musical styles. Few artists are as gifted as Wariner, and TWO TEARDROPS gives him ample opportunity to show off his talents as a singer, guitar player, and especially as a songwriter. The most successful tracks are the ones in which Wariner uses his gentle voice and restrained guitar playing to tell an emotional story, as he does in the outstanding title track. It's a brilliant, beautiful piece of songwriting in which two teardrops--one of joy and one of pain--are used as metaphors for the "circle of life." Two other songs in this vein are "I'll Always Have Denver" and "If You Don't Know By Now"--heartbreaking stories of love that has faded, and of love that will never be returned. Wariner shifts gears for upbeat tracks like the punchy "Hands Of Time," and "Talk To Her Heart," a duet with Bryan White. He rounds out the CD with a version of the 1996 Kenny Loggins pop hit "For the First Time," and the jaunty instrumental "The Harry Shuffle." TWO TEARDROPS proves that Wariner's "comeback" wasn't just a fluke.
| | Editorial reviews | ...Wariner's easy-does-it approach to singing, songwriting, and guitar playing has long proved him a master of understatement... - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (05/07/1999)
