Turquoise is a porous, non-translucent, semi-precious stone found in solid masses in the cracks of aluminum-rich rock. It is actually a hydrated phosphate of copper & aluminum and can range in color from sky blue to green. The name Turquoise is possibly from the French word pierre turquin for "blue stone", or from Turquie, the french word for Turkey where it is thought to have been discovered. The oldest turquoise mines are located in Alimersai Mountain in Persia (Iran) and in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Turquoise is found in desert regions worldwide. According to legend, Native Americans believed if turquoise was affixed to their bow, the arrow would always hit its mark. They also believed turquoise would bring happiness and good fortune. Turquoise has a hardness of 6 and a specific gravity of 2.60-2.85. Turquoise is the national gemstone of Iran and is one of December's birthstones.

Om is the sacred syllable venerated since ancient times by Buddhists, Brahmins, and Hindus alike. The universe is said to have begun with this sound, and all the sounds of life are said to be contained within it. Om is thus considered the "breath of all life", and often regarded as too holy to be spoken aloud.
Om Mani Padme Hum has no direct English translation, but often used as a guide is "Hail the jewel in the heart of lotus" or "Behold! The jewel in the lotus!". The Dalai Lama has given a synopsis of its meaning as "Thus the six syllables, Om Mani Padme Hum, mean that in dependence on the practice which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha." It is thought that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this one prayer, and that the recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. Speaking, writing, or viewing the written form of this sacred prayer is beleived to benefit karma, invoking the benevolent blessings of Chenrezig (Tibetan) Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit), the embodiment of compassion.
