This FABULOUS vintage coat has been in our family since Great-Grandma's day. We think she got it in the 30s or early 40s, and paid quite a sum for it back then. I have searched for years for anything like it, never found anything except that the fabric was probably made pre-World War II by the Stanley Woolen Company in Uxbridge, Mass, who were once known for spectacular woolen fabrics and knits. The designer was James Roxton and this was a hand-tailored, custom coat. What really makes this special IS this fabric...a special blend of fine mink and woolen they called MINKADA.
The photos do NOT show this as wonderfully as it is for real...my camera is sorely lacking and the flash fades out everything! As a couple of the photos show, this coat is BLACK....but the mink in the blend adds this fantastic grey sparkle and texture. It is NOT the type of sparkle of a metallic thread...it is very subtle and elegant. It is thick, luxurious, soft, water resistant....AMAZING!! The coat is fully lined in a very dark, soft satiny chocolate, has two deep slash pockets, & cuffs that can be folded up as shown...or left down. The second photo shows the basic shape, but BADLY faded in the flash...straight line shape, small rounded end collar can be worn up or down. Third photo shows the yoke detail and the single visible fantastic vintage button. There is another self-covered large button and loop fastener INSIDE the front edge farther down that keeps in closed invisibly.
The next photo shows a more accurate color, with the lacy, textured swirled vintage plastic/bakelite button with a WAVY top to it too! Next photo shows the Roxton Label. The final photo, (also NOT accurate color) shows a golden plastic/bakelite button...1 of 2....this one holds a tab to the BACK of the collar, the other fastens the same tab around the neck to close the collar in front! FANTASTIC tailoring, details, very unique, elegant.....and it's killing me to even consider parting with this! But I have always been allergic to both fur and wool, and it seems my daughter whom I hoped would get this is too.
FANTASTIC condition, absolutely PERFECT other than a small pinhole in the right sleeve and a loose seam under that arm, easily fixed! As for measurements: 45" from back of neck to hem bottom. Collar 13" plus 3" for the tab fastener. Across the back...24"...another 24" across the chest front. Sleeve 23" folded UP...cuff adds another 2".
This is the quality of vintage that could go to the Oscars, a elegant event, be part of a museum display of fabrics, be part of a period movie. I would like to see this preserved and treasured as the generations before me did!
